Infant Safety Checklists

Electrical Hazards
Many devices that allow you to cover unused outlets, and to also cover outlets that permanently contain plugs (such as lamps) are available. Take great care to do so to the outlets throughout your home. Toddlers are famed for their fascination with sticking "things in things" to see what fits or happens. This can be deadly with outlets. Following is a list of common hazards that should be addressed, again this is not a complete list but will provide you with a starting point:

Cover all unused outlets with child caps - many types are available at drug, hardware, toy and grocery stores.

Cover permanently plugged in outlets with outlet guards that accommodate plugs.

Make sure outlets in kitchens and bathrooms are GFCI outlets

Never leave items like hair dryers plugged in when not in use especially in the bathroom or kitchen.

Teach your children not to touch plugs or cords until they are old enough to do so responsibly. Never leave bulbs out of fixtures or lamps - if you don't have a new bulb, leave the old one in until you do!

Do not daisy-chain extension cords and NEVER leave an extension cord plugged in when outlets in the receptor end are unused. Young children should not have access to extension cords. Safely hide any cords that are plugged into extension cords, or better yet do not use extension cords at all around your child

Make sure your child does not have access to any electrical wiring
. Make sure all receptacles are functioning properly and have outlet or switch covers, as well as plug covers where appropriate.
